A lot of stories about Demons were not really about demons at all. It is an unfortunate side-effect of religions that many of them seem to need to create scare stories - "worship what we tell you or the demons will get you". So some are made up stories and others are stories about other non-humans that were simply labelled as demons by ignorant people.
But there are real demons. They are the elementals who didn't diminish themselves but persisted in large fearsome form, not as gods, but as demons. Many of these were fire elementals and no doubt this is the origin of Hades as a land of fire. And perhaps it is - I have never been there, so I can only relate stories of others. But there are precious few who have actually been there and returned to tell such stories...
It is not possible to describe exactly what a demon looks like as there are many of them in a very wide variety of forms. Most tend to have humanoid shape when on Earth, though much larger, but many appear in all sorts of other forms. There are Greater Demons and Lesser Demons, but that is purely a demon hierarchy and a puny human should definitely avoid even the most minor of demons. It is extremely rare that you won't end up worse off after meeting a demon.
